'These are real human lives.' Reporters talk one year of covering the Daybell case

REXBURG -- Four reporters share their experience covering the disappearance of 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan one year after the case went public.

EastIdahoNews.com News Director Nate Eaton and Reporter Eric Grossarth joined Fox10 Pheonix Reporter Justin Lum and Fox13 Salt Lake Investigative Reporter Adam Herbets over Zoom. Over the past year, the four reporters have covered the case in-depth.

"Really behind the scenes, this has bonded us together," Lum said.

Since the story unfolded, investigators have found JJ and Tylee's remains. Their mother Lori Vallow Daybell and her new husband Chad Daybell sit behind bars awaiting trial.

"I think this partnership has been so successful amongst the four of us," Herbets said. "... When you have a story that is this large not just in the depth of facts but also geographically it's better to team up and it's better to do the story justice."

All four reporters have spent months diving into facts of the case, searching for the truth to the kids' disappearance and to bring the answers to questions everyone asked.

"These are real human lives here that have been affected by these acts, decisions," Eaton said "There are so many stories behind the scenes that maybe one day they will all come out."
