Modern Tiki: Mr Bodi Hai

I'm giving you guys fair warning that theres a bunch of history in this video and I talk a bit before we get to the cocktail so if you aren't interested here's a time stamp: 3:19

Mr. Bodi Hai was created by Los Angeles bartender and Tiki expert Nathan Hazard who is now the Real McCoy rum brand ambassador. It has also been published in New York Bartender/Cocktail Consultant Shannon Mustipher's book Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails, which all of you should pick up and read, definitely one of my favorite cocktail books of the year (link is below). I got to sit down with Nathan at my bar pretty recently for a Rum tasting and history lesson and was so intrigued, I had to include his amazing cocktail on this channel. This drink was inspired by the Mr. Bali Hai cocktail (which we already did an episode on) which is one of my absolute favorites in the tiki cannon.

At first glance Real McCoy might seem like a vanity rum and truth be told when I first encountered it I was a little skeptical. I will admit I am a bit of Rum novice though so I take every opportunity to sit down with people who know more, taste the juice, have a chat and get educated. When some bar managers sit down with spirits reps a lot feel that they're just being marketed to, and sometimes that's true. But I always try and learn something I didn't know from these interactions and it's always payed off in spades. Real McCoy takes it's name from Bill McCoy (not related to the Hatfields and McCoys so calm down you history buffs) who was a rum runner during prohibition. He figured out that he could load a boat with rum, sail it up to New York City and sell it to people by parking his boat three miles off shore. Why three miles? Because according to the laws of the day, three miles off shore was international waters and the authorities had no jurisdiction. Mr. McCoy made a name for himself because he never adulterated his rum, while others were cutting their rum with Prune Juice and wood alcohol, Bill was always selling the best stuff. His customers dubbed his rum "The Real McCoy."

Fast forward to present day and filmmaker Bailey Prior traveled down to Barbados while making a film about Bill McCoy. While researching the film he met fourth generation Rum distiller Richard Seale who was operating the Foursquare distillery. Together they came up with the formula for The Real McCoy and the rest, as they say, is history. So do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle or two of this wonderful rum and enjoy this tiki drink from Nathan Hazard!
