5KX hairspring fix: timing pins made it look worse. Coaxed it back (101 style). #Seiko5

Seiko 5KX (Seiko 5 SBSA005 / 4R36) hairspring repair after a drop: fixing a bent/kinked hairspring and restoring the terminal curve. In this step I remove the hairspring from the balance cock and notice the shape improves significantly once it’s free—this is common when the bend is near the terminal curve, because the timing pins can pinch and exaggerate the issue. That pinching can push adjacent coils out of position, making the hairspring bunch up and look worse than it truly is.

I’m not claiming to be a hairspring manipulation expert, but I use a method similar to the well-known “hairspring straightening 101” tutorial (if you know, you know). There are multiple approaches and no single perfect method, but the technique in that tutorial resonated with me. Using basic tools made from modified tweezers and oilers, I carefully coax the hairspring back into shape with small, deliberate nudges. It often takes multiple attempts to get the curve and spacing right, even if the edit makes it look quick.

With the hairspring corrected, the next step is reassembling the escapement/balance assembly and re-testing on the timegrapher to see if this resolves the timing instability (snowstorm trace), improves amplitude, reduces beat error, and restores a stable rate—or if there are additional hidden issues from the impact.
