Colchester - the first capital of Roman Britain
Colchester is a historic town located in Essex, England. It served as the first capital of Roman Britain and is the oldest recorded town in Britain. It was raided by the Vikings during the 9th and 10th centuries. It also served as an essential location for the medieval cloth trade.
Fast forward to the present day and although the name has now changed to Colchester it remains one of the finest locations for exploring Roman Britain in the country and is a fantastic city for history lovers to explore on a day trip or short break.
Colchester and its surrounding area offers a wide variety of things to do, places to see, and fantastic attractions to explore.
Castle Park is a Victorian park built on Roman foundations and offers a boating lake, miniature golf, a bandstand and a play park. The park draws over a million people every year to see the chunk of the Roman wall that divides the Upper Park and Lower Park, and even today maintains its Victorian charm and design.
Historic Colchester Town Hall is popular as a venue for events and weddings, but history lovers come to view the stained glass, oil paintings, murals and architecture in the rooms. Originally built around 1160, the building was renovated in the late Victorian era with opulent rooms, stunning architecture and a Victorian tower standing at 49 metres.
Balkerne Hill to the west of the Town Centre, contains Balkerne Gate, which is Britain’s oldest and most intact Roman gate. This would have been the main entrance into the Roman town and is still a key entrance into the modern town.
Colchester's South Lanes are home to over 70 small and independent shops and businesses.
Colchester High Street is also another good location for shopping, with a large number of national retailers and restaurants located along here, and as well as market stalls. The ‘Jumbo’ water tower can be spotted in the distance peering over the buildings.
