Car Tyre Foundations // Strawbale build PART II

Rammed Tyre foundations are a great building method. They are solid, low-cost and use a waste product that would other wise be shipped to the developing world (with a huge carbon footprint). Even though the car-tyres are not natural they are commonly used as part of natural buildings as they are carbon neutral and a waste produce. As long as the tyres are protected from the sun and weather once the building is complete they should not breakdown significantly over time.

Using pea-shingle or pea-gravel to fill the tyres means that water cannot wick up into the frame of the building and any water that does get to them will drain away. It is a physically intense task to fill these up and ram all the stone into the corners, particularly under the rim of the tyre. One thing to make sure you do, if you try this at home, is to use cardboard to help keep the stone contained within the tyre while you are compressing it. This is obviously degrade over time but then the gravel will be compressed and settled.

I take the time to show the whole process from start to finish, so you can see everything you would need if you want to do this yourself.

If you try this yourself or if you have done this already let me know in the comments below!
