Can women work in Islam?

Question: Woman driving and working is permitted?

Salaam Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,,
Sheikh Karim,
My husband keeps telling me that I can go to the grocery store when he is at work to buy groceries. I have told him many times leaving the house without mahram and driving especially is haram. I wanted clarification from you: can a woman drive? Am I allowed to leave the house to buy groceries? He has also suggested I find a job as my kids are getting older, is this not haram as well? There will be men in the workplace.
