Aulacophora femoralis beetles || Nature's sign

Aulacophora femoralis is a genus of beetle. They are in the family Chrysomelidae. Their common name is pumpkin beetles. They are pests of agricultural crops. Their body length up to 8 mm long. Found in Asia, Africa and Australasia. They feed on host plants including cucumbers, pumpkins, gourds, melons, watermelons and squashes. Pumpkin beetles feed on the foliage and flowers of the host plants. Seedlings may be destroyed by heavy attacks and young plants may be severely affected. Several beetles may cluster on a single leaf, leaving other leaves untouched. They feed between the veins, often cutting and removing circular discs which they then eat. Females are laid yellow eggs in batches up to 5 in the soil at the base of cucurbit plants. After 8-15 days the larvae feed on the roots or tunnel into them. They feeding for 18-35 days and passing through 4 instar stages. They are creamy white at first but have turned yellowish orange by the time they pupate in chambers in the ground. The adult beetles emerge after from 4-14 days. They can easily fly and disperse to other plants. Each female beetles can lay in order of 500 eggs. Pumpkin beetles may live for up to 10 months.
