The song and album were written by Bruce Woolley, Simon Darlow, Stephen Lipson and Trevor Horn and produced by Horn. This was the singer's first album in 3 years, and contained eight variations of the same song (side B of the single is another variation, still released on CD). "Slave to the Rhythm" was originally intended for Frankie Goes to Hollywood as a successor to her debut single "Relax." The song was assembled and produced by Horn after "Two Tribes", but the project was given to the singer. Paul Morley says Horn worked on the song nonstop and hoped it would become one of his biggest and most successful creations.

It mainly consists of images already seen, using excerpts from music videos previously released by Jones, "My Jamaican Guy" and "Living My Life", as well as the documentary ‘A One Man Show’. Also included are images of some of the singer's most iconic looks and the Citroën CX TV ad. No new footage of Jones herself was made for the video, which features a voice spoken by actor Ian McShane, taken from tracks like "Operattack." The video, of its various versions, was directed by Jean-Paul Goude, Jones's boyfriend at the time.
The video was nominated for 'Best Female Video' at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards, eventually losing to Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know."
