ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
When I first saw The Beloved's music video for their song Time After Time I immediately recognized the influences of the 70's cult classic film The Man Who Fell To Earth and also really loved the song and its production. The Beloved's video was to me like a mashup of, say, David Lynch directing a music video based on Nicolas Roeg's TMWFTE.
TMWFTE is a film that left a great and lasting impression on me (I first saw it when I was about 12) and while still a difficult (and in many ways frustrating) movie to watch given its non-linear, minimalist arthouse style, it still manages to communicate emotions and ideas as few films do. In a strange convergence the song Time After Time, with its resonating lyrics and visuals along with TMWFTE's mise en scène, unforgettably haunting imagery and deep themes and layers of strange convergences of a stranger in a strange land all coincided for me. Of course, the passing of David Bowie makes it all the more poignant. Another strange irony is that when I first saw the film I had no idea who David Bowie was, yet he and his work were to become major influences in my life. A truly unique individual and talent. So this video has many of layers of meaning for me personally, I hope you enjoy it, and if you haven't seen TMWFTE maybe this video will inspire you to give it a try.
