DRUM COVER - Song of the Evergreens by Chicago

Here's a really fun tune from one of my favorite Chicago records, VII. Written and featuring the great Terry Kath, this one has a lot of different sections the go between a more half time feel and a really cooking groove (or double time depending on how you feel the quarter note). I love Danny's use of the crashes and ride in this tune, both in the intro where he plays around over the verses, and later on toward the ride out where he uses them as parts of his fills. I tried to match up with as many of the fills towards the end as I could but as always, I try to go for vibe over complete 100% accuracy which in my opinion can sometimes hurt a good take if I'm overly focused on playing each fill completely accurate. What amazes me is how many of the fills the rest of the band is locked in with. There are certain accents (mostly on the crashes) that Danny hits where Peter and Terry are completely in sync with him which almost makes me think that some of the ride out was arranged even though it sounds like they are just vamping as Terry solos. There's so much going on that you almost forget there are no horns on this one!
