Nature is often seen as a beautiful and harmonious entity, but the reality is that it can also be brutal and merciless. In the animal kingdom, survival of the fittest is the only rule, and sometimes that means turning on your own kind. But before we get started, let's ask ourselves: why are we so fascinated by these gruesome acts? Is it simply morbid curiosity, or does it speak to something deeper within us?
Today, we're going to explore the darker side of nature and take a look at 15 ruthless and cruel moments of animals devouring their own kind.

Number 15: Lions
A lioness or group of lionesses often attack lions to protect their cubs or their territory, even leading to death of the lion if necessary.
In this shocking clip, we witness a surprising turn of events as a lion roars in pain while a group of lionesses devour it together. Despite being known for their strength and power, even lions can fall victim to the merciless attacks of their own kind. Whether done to protect their young or for other reasons altogether, it’s a sad end for the king.
Cannibalism in African lions is rare. But, this behaviour is possible when done out of hunger.
In this unusual clip, we witness a young lion male feasting on the deceased body of another lion. While it may seem shocking to us, this behaviour is not uncommon in the animal kingdom. And the young male is taking advantage of a readily available source of food, even if it means consuming the remains of another member of their own species.
When a new male takes over a pride he will commonly kill any existing cubs, as he doesn't want to become a 'step-father', investing resources into young that aren't his own.
We witness a territorial dispute between a big male lion from one pride and a young lioness from another pride. The big male lion was probably disturbed by the lioness during feasting, who likely saw an opportunity to scavenge some of the meat for herself. However, the male lion saw her as a threat and attacked her, ultimately killing her in the process.

Number 14: Crocodiles
Crocodiles are carnivores, which means they eat only meat. In the wild, they feast on fish, birds, frogs and crustaceans. Occasionally, crocs also cannibalize each other.
In this clip, we see a disturbing scene of a large crocodile attacking and devouring a smaller alligator. The alligator tries its best to resist, but, against such a large size and power difference, there’s not much it can do. Eventually, the alligator succumbs to its wounds and gets dragged into the water by the larger crocodile.
Crocodiles have incredibly fast scar tissue and strong antibodies, allowing them to stop blood flow to decapitated limbs easily.
In this clip, we can see a crocodile desperately trying to free its foot from the jaws of another crocodile. Despite the other’s firm grip, the crocodile does manage to get its foot free. Unfortunately however, the other croc does manage to take off a few fingers. This won’t be fatal for the crocodile, as they can quickly stop the blood flow to any lost limbs.
Crocodilians, including the alligator, perform a spinning manoeuvre to subdue and dismember prey. This spinning manoeuvre is referred to as the death roll.
In this shocking clip, we witness a disturbing display of cannibalism as a crocodile attacks and devours the legs of its own kind. With brutal force, the predator clamps down on its victim's limbs, pulling it apart. It even uses the death roll. But, whether it didn’t try hard enough or for some other reason, he lets go mid roll.

Number 13: Storks
A mating pair of storks divides their parenting responsibilities equally. During the incubation period, the female and male take turns keeping their eggs warm until the eggs hatch.
In this clip, we can see an intruder stork brutally attacking 3 young storks. From what we know of storks, we can probably assume that the intruder is a female without a nest, and is attacking the chicks in order to take over the nest for itself. Unfortunately for the chicks however, their parents aren’t present to protect them, and they succumb to the intruder’s relentless blows.
