What is the stock market? The stock market is a market to buy and sell stocks. The stock market is open to the public to trade on, which is why some companies are called publicly-traded.

Why invest in stocks? Stock market investing can make you a lot of money over time. If you stopped working, how would you earn income? Stocks can provide income through dividend stock investing or wealth appreciation through growth stock investing.

The Dow Jones and S&P500 are collections of certain stocks. The Dow Jones has 30 stocks, and the S&P500 is 500 stocks.

What is a stock? A stock is a share of a company, which is why the stock owners are known as shareholders. A stock is also equity in the company, meaning what the company owns versus what it owes. just like a house. You own the house, minus the debt, is your equity. That is why stocks are also called equities.

What is a dividend? A dividend is a payment to the owner of the company. As an owner of the company, you can get paid from the company. Usually, stock dividends are paid quarterly. Not all companies in the stock market pay dividends.

Why do stock prices change over time? Stocks are bought and sold by billions of people around the world, and what a buyer is will to pay for a stock and what a seller is willing to sell the stock for is the price of the stock. Stock prices change every day because new information is available for stocks every day.

Stocks are prices based upon the company's earnings and the multiple an investor is willing to pay for the company earnings. The company earnings are just what the company made in revenue minus its costs. The stock market multiple is how many times the earnings go into the share price. If there is a higher multiple, it means investors are paying more for a company than another company with the same earnings and a lower multiple. The share price multiple is higher for higher growth or less risky companies, and the share price multiple is lower for higher risk or lower growth companies. Other factors can come into play in the value of the company, including its cash on hand, but stock earnings and stock market multiples are the two key factors.

If a stock's EARNINGS go up, then the share price will go up if the multiple stays the same.
If a stock's MULTIPLE goes up, then the share price will go up if earnings stay the same.
