I demonstrate how to fill out the application. You will need to know what improvements you are making in order to fill out the components that are required to complete the work. You use this information and estimates from your local electrical supplier to give you a total cost. You will need to include a description of the work so the construction official can decide what the permit will be classified as. For instance, I submitted a permit to rip the walls out of a room and bring the room up to the current code with fire blocking and electrical code. This was classified as rehabilitation work. You also need to create a sketch that will identify the layout of the room or rooms, location of luminaries (lights), outlets (receptacles), switches, ceiling fans, HVAC Heater Air Conditioning units and smoke detectors if applicable. You then pay for the permit once they tell you how much it costs and begin work. You perform your framing first, then electrical and call for rough inspection. After rough inspection then you call for framing and insulation / fire blocking rough inspection. After the rough inspection you finish your work if you passed. If you failed, make adjustments and call back for a 2nd/3rd inspection, which may cost you extra. Then complete the work in its entirety and call for final electrical and final building inspection and receive your permit. File your permit placard in a good place. I usually stick it to my electrical panel as this is a safe place and is not likely to move. This will be needed when you try to sell your home.

Places where you can get estimates for the building materials and electrical components include true value, home depot, lowes, Manards, and Do It Best. Try to shop local first to help out the small businesses.
