Adoptions & illegitimacies - using DNA to solve adoption mysteries

Every family tree has an adoption or an illegitimacy. It may be you, one of your parents, your grandparents, or some distant cousin. More and more adoptees are turning to DNA to help them when the paper trail runs out, and they are having great success. Using real life examples, this presentation will explore how the different DNA tests can help reconnect adoptees with their birth families, and help solve adoption mysteries going back several generations. We will also discuss some of the obstacles and hurdles encountered and how to best anticipate them and thus optimize the chances of a successful outcome all around. In addition, the adoption community in the U.S. has developed some amazing tools to help adoptees use DNA, and these techniques are extremely useful for ordinary family tree research. This methodology will be reviewed and future developments in this field will be explored.
