Mystery Skull
Researchers in Portugal found a skull fragment in an ancient cave near Torres Novas that is presenting more questions than answers … one thing has been determined -- the fossil is dated at around 400,000 years old -- making it the oldest human cranium fossil ever found in the country. Still unknown is the adult specimen’s gender … how it died … or what type of early human it may have been. While not a Neanderthal, experts do say that the skull fragment bears characteristics that indicate it could be an ancestor to both Neanderthals and human ancestors. About a third of the cranium was discovered in the cave, embedding in rock … located nearby were a collection of Acheulean (uh-SHOO-lee-un) stone tools that included teardrop-shaped hand axes -- which gives insight as the ancient group’s hunting and eating habits. Some experts think that the skull’s physical characteristics, along with the stone tools found, indicates that humans were a single interbreeding species around 400,000 years ago.

The Storr Lochs Monster
An amateur fossil collector made an amazing discovery was made in 1966 near the Storr Loch Power Station on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. But it took nearly 50 years before it was identified as the fossilized skeleton of a 13-foot marine reptile that dates back around 170 million years. Experts say the critter is an ichthyosaur, also called ‘fish lizards’. The large sea reptiles were found in the waters between 250 to 90 million years ago. They shared physical characteristics with dolphins … including long, narrow snouts and cone-shaped teeth. Because these creatures were noted for their long necks, cryptozoologists have speculated whether they might somehow be related to the Loch Ness monster. There is one major difference between the two critters, though. The newly identified ichthyosaurs (ick-THEE-oh-sores) existence has been definitively proven by science … while Nessie is still regarded as a cryptid. But they do share a resemblance and both called Scotland home. Could there be a connection?

XL (Extra Large) Lemurs (poss thumb #4, 6)
We usually think of lemurs as smallish primates … generally, they range in size from around an ounce to around 20 pounds, depending on the species. But some fossils discovered in Madagascar indicate the critter may have grown much larger than that -- to the size of gorillas! Hundreds of fossilized skeletons and bones of animals including a giant fossa, elephant birds, and horned crocodiles were found in a flooded cave off the west coast of the island nation -- and even more critters might be buried in the silt. Based on previous finds in the region, experts say the fossils likely date back some 4,000 years, and were nearly perfectly preserved. At the base of the caves explorers found the skull of a lemur that measured about a foot in length. It’s estimated that the ancient species might have weighed upwards of 165 pounds … which would have made it roughly the size of a female gorilla! And remains of another lemur found at the location might have belonged to a critter that was even bigger. Paleontologists say that specimen could have approached the size of a male gorilla -- which can weigh around 400 pounds! Those super sized lemurs would have resembled koalas, according to our sources. While the underwater graveyard is being hailed as a remarkable discovery, it’s still a mystery as to how all those animals happened to die in the same location.

Thunder Down Under
As you might have noticed, Australia can lay claim to some of the most amazing wildlife in the world … and now Oz can claim the world’s biggest dinosaur footprint! It was uncovered in the Kimberley region of Western Australia … and measures an incredible 5 feet, nine inches … making it about the size of a man! Researchers used drones and laser imaging to better pinpoint and analyse the location of the print. They think tit was left by a sauropod … those gigantic creatures were identified by their long necks and tails, and their four, pillar-like legs … one of the better known animals might be brontosaurus. This newly discovered beast would have roamed the region around 140 million years ago, and was likely more than 17 feet high at the hips. And researchers say it had plenty of company back in the day. The enormous print was found alongside more than 20 unique types of dinosaur tracks in an area that’s often referred to as ‘Australia’s Jurassic Park’. Experts are calling it the most diverse find of its kind in the world.
