Aiwa AR-888 Pocket AM Radio Receiver — Vintage Made in India AM Radio from the 1970s
In this video on SpaceTime Engineering, we take a close look at the Aiwa AR-888 Pocket AM Radio Receiver, a compact vintage AM-only radio from the classic pocket transistor radio era.
This small Aiwa receiver is simple, practical, and full of old-school charm. The front is marked AR-888, while the rear label identifies this version as AR-888V and clearly shows Made in India, making this a particularly interesting example of Aiwa’s international production history.
The AR-888 is designed for medium wave AM broadcast listening, with a tuning range shown from around 530 to 1600 kHz. It runs on two AA batteries, uses a built-in speaker, and features a compact vertical cabinet with a wrist strap, analog tuning dial, and simple volume/tuning controls.
Key highlights include:
Aiwa AR-888 / AR-888V pocket AM receiver
Made in India version
AM medium wave broadcast reception
Approx. 530–1600 kHz tuning scale
Powered by 2 x AA batteries / 3V DC
Built-in speaker
Compact pocket-size design
Analog tuning control
Classic late-1970s / early-1980s styling
Collector references list the AR-888V as a small superheterodyne AM receiver, with examples often dated around 1979. It represents a time when pocket radios were everyday companions for news, music, local broadcasts, sports, and travel listening.
Unlike larger world-band receivers, the Aiwa AR-888 does not cover FM or shortwave. Its purpose is beautifully focused: simple AM reception in a small, portable package.
In this video, we showcase the design, controls, rear label, battery operation, and overall condition of this vintage Aiwa pocket radio. We also test how well it receives AM broadcasts during the late afternoon, when medium wave propagation can start to become more interesting.
This is a lovely little radio for collectors of vintage electronics, Aiwa products, pocket transistor radios, and classic AM broadcast receivers.
Disclaimer: Reception quality depends on location, time of day, local electrical noise, antenna orientation, battery condition, and the availability of AM stations in your area.
