In converation with Scott Morse | Cars 3 | Interview

At the Edinburgh International Film Festival I had the chance to talk to Scott Morse, who's the story supervisor of CARS 3. We talked about his duties as the head of story, the necessary steps of a film before the first pictured is being created and how in a franchise like CARS they make sure, that they still have a good story to tell.

ABOUT CARS 3
Lightning McQueen is back on the big screen, but he’s not a rookie anymore. Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen finds himself suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves.

ABOUT SCOTT MORSE
Scott Morse joined Pixar Animation Studios in February 2005 as a story artist and helped to develop and refine all phases of the story process, including concept writing, plot structure, character development, gags/jokes, dialogue, pacing and staging. Morse worked on the Academy Award®-winning feature films “Ratatouille” and “WALL•E,” and was nominated by ASIFA-Hollywood for the 2012 Annie Awards for his work on “Cars 2” in the individual achievement category for storyboarding in a feature production. Morse’s next project as a story artist was 2012’s Academy Award-winning “Brave.”

In addition to his work on Pixar’s features, Morse contributes to the studio’s short films. He has worked on the story teams for “Your Friend the Rat”; the Oscar®-nominated “Day & Night”; and several of the “Cars Toons,” including “Tokyo Mater,” “El Materdor” and “Monster Truck Mater.” In 2014, Morse co-directed the “Tales From Radiator Springs” episode “The Radiator Spring 500 ½.”

Morse began his career working at Chuck Jones Film Productions under the mentorship of legendary designer Maurice Noble. Within a year, he moved into development at Turner Feature Animation, where he met many of his future Pixar colleagues. Morse went on to work as an art director at Universal and then Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network. At Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network, Morse art directed and worked in story, eventually developing a pilot on his own. He also created his own graphic novels and comics with various publishers, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Oni. Morse also served as an art director for “Catscratch,” a series at Nickelodeon.

Along with all of his work in film, Morse is the author of a five-book series for Scholastic Books called “Magic Pickle.” The series, aimed at a 2nd – 3rd grade reading level, has gone on to popular acclaim in schools worldwide.

Born and raised in Santa Clara, Calif., Morse lives with his family in the Bay Area.
