The project’s goal was initially a thread of silver, but true luxury knows only one colour: gold. Material factory Jakob Schlaepfer in collaboration with Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, have developed a vacuum coating system to produce a yarn with a layer of pure 24-carat gold. Woven fabrics sparkle with the characteristic colour of this precious metal. This is the beginning of a production process that is the first in the world to produce a permanently coated gold fabric.

During the process, a piece of gold is bombarded with argon ions so that the gold atoms move away and adhere to a polyester thread; even if the yarn is wound, twisted, processed in weaving machines the precious metal remains sticky.
