The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5–4 in favor of the Trump administration's request to lift a lower court order blocking the deportation of suspected members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua under the Alien Enemies Act (AEA). The ruling overturns a decision by Judge James Boasberg that had temporarily protected these individuals from removal.

However, while the Court sided with Trump on the administration’s authority to proceed, it emphasized that detainees must still be given due process, including timely notice and an opportunity to seek habeas corpus relief before deportation.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor led the dissent, joined by Justices Kagan and Jackson, and partially by Justice Amy Coney Barrett. The majority opinion acknowledged the executive branch's authority in national security matters but also underlined constitutional safeguards for individuals—even those labeled as “alien enemies.”

The Trump administration had argued the case was about who holds the power to manage national security operations: the President under Article II or the Judiciary through temporary restraining orders. The decision marks a legal win for Trump, but with significant judicial guardrails attached.
