PMC Promises Relief as Kharadi Residents End Fast Over Water Supply Issues
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has promised time-bound measures to address persistent water supply issues in Kharadi after residents launched a protest and began a fast seeking immediate intervention.
Senior civic officials reached the protest site and held discussions with members of various housing societies. Following the meeting, the PMC announced a three-point plan aimed at improving water availability in the area.
According to the civic body, three water tanks located in Survey No. 58 will be filled to capacity within the next 15 days. In addition, the overhead water tank in Survey No. 38 is expected to be made functional within a month, before the end of May 2026. Officials also said that water supply to Survey No. 58 will be increased as part of the interim measures.
As a longer-term step, the PMC confirmed that a detailed survey for a piped water supply network across Kharadi will begin from Saturday. Based on the findings, a comprehensive plan to streamline and improve water distribution in the locality will be prepared.
Members of the Kharadi Housing Welfare Society Association (KHWSA), including chairman Deepak Patil, secretary Manoj Dudhankar, and residents Pravin Zore, Harshal Gharge, Pritam Singh, Kiran Palse, Abhishek Kumar, and Rahul Parmar, participated in the protest.
Residents highlighted the financial strain caused by the ongoing shortage. Sumit Dusad, a local resident, said that despite paying property taxes and rising maintenance charges, citizens continue to face inadequate water supply. He pointed out that many societies are forced to rely on private water tankers, effectively increasing the cost burden on households.
Pravin Zore, a resident of Forest County society, said the shortage has led to a sharp rise in maintenance expenses, with monthly costs increasing by 50 to 80 percent due to tanker dependency. He urged the civic body to ensure a reliable and consistent water supply.
PMC officials, including Virendra Kelkar, Eknath Gadekar, Sunil Mohite, Nitin Jadhav, Shripal Jadhav, and Pankaj Atarde, were present during the discussions and assured residents of prompt action. Following these assurances, the protesters called off their fast.
Residents said the announcement offers temporary relief, but stressed the need for sustained action as Kharadi continues to expand rapidly and faces growing infrastructure challenges.
