Walking streets of Honduras | Encounters w/ samaritans & gangs in La Lima

I walk through the streets of La Lima, Honduras, a city often stigmatized for its level of crime—and turf war going on between MS-13 and Mara 18 (18th Street).

Despite its dangerous neighborhoods, Lima is a beautiful city with amazing restaurants, friendly locals, and the largest public youth center in the nation. Having built three schools in the city, La Lima has a special place in my heart.

As I walk through town, I try incredible foods and stumble across friendly locals, teenage laborers, hardworking entrepreneurs, drunks, youth mentors, and police officers. My experience is pleasant and heartwarming—until I get surrounded by armed gang members who take me by surprise.
