Minor Seventh Chords + Reggae Groove - Jazz Bass Chords 1/4

In part one of our four-part series on bass chords, we'll learn two different shapes for the minor seventh chords. Minor seventh chords come from the dorian mode most commonly (especially in a jazz/funk context), although the minor scale and phrygian scale will both generate the same chord as well. Minor seventh chords serve a lot of different functions in chord progressions. In today's groove you'll see them acting as I, IV, and V chords. Often in a major key tune you'll see the two chord or the six chord as a minor 7 (iim7 or vim7 in roman numeral notation).

The reggae groove etude I've written for this video will help you put these minor 7 voicings into action. You'll notice that we're switching between the two shapes through the progression. This is to smooth out the "voice leading," which means that from chord to chord we're trying not to have our notes slide around more than necessary.

Stay tuned for the rest of this bass chords series, where we'll also cover dominant seventh and major seventh chords, and then tie it all up with the jazz standard Autumn Leaves!
