Say Goodbye to Kidney Stones: Shock Wave Lithotripsy
Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is a non-surgical procedure that breaks up kidney stones using shock waves.
The shock waves are generated by a machine called a lithotripter.
The waves are targeted at the kidney stones using an X-ray or ultrasound.
The waves break the stones into tiny pieces.
SWL is the most common treatment for kidney stones in the U.S. It is also used to treat stones in the urinary tract, bile ducts, and pancreatic duct.
During the procedure, the patient is asleep and pain-free. If the patient is awake, they may feel a tapping sensation when the waves hit the stones.
Potential risks of SWL include:
Blockage in the ureter
Blood in the urine or bleeding around the kidney
Infection
Mild discomfort or bruising on the back
Painful urination
SWL is generally considered to be a painful procedure. This could be caused by the shock waves reaching the skin, muscle, ribs, nerves, and the kidney capsule.
