Elkland, MO massacre, Oct.1987 Associated Press Top Spot News Story for Nation 1987

This was an entire family that was slaugtered on two farms in Elkland, MO. The investigation took some strange twists and the young man suspected to have done it and then took his own life was not guilty at all, but his uncle, who hilled his wife and then went down the road to claim the other victims. The murder weapon was found in the young man's right hand and he was left handed and that is how they figured it out and got the confession from the Uncle the following day. This multi-location coverage won our new team the Associated Press' Top Spot News Story in the Nation for 1987. I was one of four photographers who shot and edited the wall to wall coverage. This was one of those rare stories where a newsroom devotes all their resources to on story in a day. For us it paid off.
