A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that causes a temporary disruption of brain function due to rapid movement of the brain inside the skull.

In this EMT training video, you’ll learn:

What a concussion is and how it differs from increased intracranial pressure (ICP)

Key signs and symptoms: confusion, headache, dizziness, nausea, temporary memory loss

Additional symptoms: light sensitivity, difficulty concentrating, emotional changes

How to distinguish concussion from more severe TBIs (no bradycardia, irregular breathing, blown pupils, or severe hypertension)

Example scenario: patient struck in a fight presenting with confusion, nausea, vomiting

EMS management: supportive care, monitor mental status, prepare for transport

ALS considerations: IV access, monitoring for worsening neuro dysfunction, and when mannitol may be used if ICP suspected

👉 Concussions are among the most common trauma calls. Understanding how to assess and manage them is essential for NREMT prep and real-world EMS.
