Local Locksmith (going extinct) to the Rescue!

Many years ago when I was putting my awesome Whalen reloading bench together I knew someday that the cheesy plastic covered keys for the upper cabinets would probably break. Well, that day finally arrived recently when Ward (me) was a bit too hard on the Beaver (cabinet lock). Points to anyone knowing what my reference to Ward/Beaver are from ;-) Yes, I'm that old!

My first thought was to just replace the cylinder lock. But I couldn't find an identical lock that had the green (unlocked) and red (locked) visual indicators. Hmmm, time for plan b.

Off to the local big box shop to get a key made. Nope. Kiosk machine can't even recognize the key. Few isles down find the official key making machine and waived down someone who looked SO excited to be of service. No go. The official machine is about as useful as the kiosk was.

Plan c...local locksmith search. Over the past few years I've seen local locksmith shops, like LGSes, close down. Everything seems to be mobile from a van aimed at car/house issues. Lucked out and found a recently opened (imagine that!) shop filled with old school machines that take talent/skill to physically duplicate a key. Low and behold, I now have 2 real full keys! A feel good win to patronize a local business to apply a trade/skill to custom make me something. Good stuff.
