The Equal Earth Map: The Truth About Africa’s Real Size and the World We Never Learned
For centuries, the world has been looking at a distorted map. The traditional Mercator projection, created in 1569, was never designed to show the true size of continents. Instead, it was built for navigation. The problem is that this map exaggerates the size of Europe and North America while shrinking Africa and countries along the equator. On a Mercator map, Greenland looks the same size as Africa, even though Africa is actually 14 times larger. This distortion has shaped how generations of people understand geography, power, and history.
Today, the African Union is standing up to change this narrative by endorsing the Equal Earth projection. Unlike Mercator, the Equal Earth map shows landmasses according to their real size, giving viewers a more accurate representation of the world. This shift is about more than just geography—it’s about correcting history, challenging old colonial mindsets, and giving Africa the presence it truly deserves on the global stage.
The movement to “Correct the Map” connects to the Berlin Conference of 1884, when European powers divided Africa into borders without a single African voice at the table. First Africa was divided, then its image was literally made smaller through maps used in schools, textbooks, and media across the globe. These distortions contributed to the perception of Africa as weak, marginal, and less important. By rewriting the map, leaders and scholars believe we can rewrite the narrative of Africa itself.
In this video, we dive into the history of map projections, why the Mercator projection became so dominant, and why the Equal Earth projection matters for the future. We’ll look at the hidden history behind maps, how they influenced politics and power, and why correcting these distortions is a symbolic and practical step toward global fairness.
If you’re passionate about history, geography, Africa, hidden truths, and decolonizing education, this video is for you. Whether you’re African, African American, or simply curious about the world, understanding the Equal Earth map will change how you see global history forever.
