Conservation of Jean-Baptiste Oudry's Rhinoceros Painting
In 2001, two paintings by the 18th-century French artist Jean-Baptiste Oudry that had been rolled up and stored for over 150 years in the basement of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin in northeast Germany, were shown to Mark Leonard, conservator of paintings, and Scott Schaefer, curator of paintings. The Getty offered to repair and restore the life-size animal portraits, Rhinoceros and Lion , as part of an ambitious conservation partnership between the museums. Watch various aspects of the conservation process of the Rhinoceros in this video, which features footage from a 30-minute documentary by William Friedkin.
