Most passengers have no idea that the hardest, most chaotic part of a flight attendant’s job is the only part airlines barely pay for. Boarding is where everything happens at once. Seat fights. Bag fights. Pre-boards. Wheelchairs. Exit-row checks. Medical issues. De-escalation. Safety oversight. And for decades, flight attendants earned nothing for it.

Only four airlines in the United States pay for boarding: Delta, Alaska, United, and American. And even then, it’s only half of regular hourly pay. Clocking in doesn’t start pay. Boarding doesn’t start pay. Delays don’t start pay. Sit time between flights is unpaid too. Full pay only starts when the boarding door closes.

This is why flight attendants fought for boarding pay for decades. And why the fight isn’t over.
