NeuroTechX Showcase - Season 2 (Episode 6): Applications (hardware and software)
Episode 6: Dr. April Khademi (RyersonU, Toronto)
Title: Advanced tools for translational diagnostic image analysis
Neurodegeneration and dementia pose significant burdens on healthcare systems. Image analysis and machine learning algorithms have been rapidly advancing and hold great potential to improve the diagnostic process. Automated tools can augment neurological workflows to provide objective measures of disease, for longitudinal monitoring, determining optimal intervention points and for clinical trials. Traditionally, these algorithms have been designed using single center data, which lacks variability needed to generalize to new patients and imaging centers. In this podcast, we will discuss some of the issues needed for developing and translating tools for neurodegenerative disease management and analysis.
Bio
Dr. April Khademi leads the Image Analysis in Medicine Lab (IAMLAB) at Ryerson University, which brings engineers and clinicians together to design image analysis and machine learning software tools for radiology and pathology images. She is also an Investigator for the Canadian Consortium of Neurodegeneration and Aging (CCNA), Affiliate Scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital and a Member of Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science & Technology (iBEST). Before creating IAMLAB, April worked in research and development with healthcare institutions in Toronto, including GE Healthcare, Pathcore, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. April completed her PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto in 2012 and MASc at Ryerson University in 2006. She is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University and a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario.
