VERNON - A person of interest was being sought in connection with fatal crash Saturday morning in Vernon between a big rig and a pickup truck.
The big rig driver allegedly ran a red light and crashed into the pickup truck, killing its passenger, according to Vernon police.
The pickup driver was injured but was hospitalized in good condition, police said.
The coroner's office identified the deceased victim as Armando Murillo, 28, of Pacoima.
At 3:10 a.m. Saturday, the trucker ran a red light while westbound on 37th Street and collided with the pickup truck with two men inside heading northbound on Santa Fe Avenue, according to Vernon police Sgt. Brandon Gray.
The Chevrolet pickup truck became lodged underneath the big rig's trailer. The trucker then unhooked the trailer from his cab and drove away westbound on 37th Street, Gray said.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics rushed the driver to a hospital, where he was listed in good condition with minor injuries, the sergeant said.
The big rig driver was described as a tall white male, Gray said, but police later said they were seeking Guillermo Ortiz Jr. as a person of interest and asked anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to call Detective
Gabriel Martinez at (323) 587-5171, extension 131.
It's unclear whether Ortiz is suspected of being the hit-and-run driver of the big rig or a possible witness. -CNS
