Urrgh. Insect infestations are THE WORST. What RimWorld player hasn’t wondered how to stop bugs from spawning in the middle of their food storage area? Unfortunately, if you live under a mountain, there is (almost!) no way to guarantee a no-bug, insect-free base. You can’t stop hives from spawning. But you CAN control where hives spawn, and make sure the insect infestations show up where YOU want them to be, rather than where you want them to NOT be.

In this video, we use SCIENCE!!! to examine how the following factors impact where insect hives will appear:

1. The ‘mountainyness’ of a region;
2. The size of a region;
3. The temperature of a region; and
4. The floor type of a region.

We use the dev mode “Show Infestation Chance” tool, plus some actual quantitative tests, to see how these factors affect *where* the game chooses to spawn its nasty, nasty insect infestation hive. The conclusion? We can’t tell you how to stop infestations once and for all, but we can see how to make sure that there are (probably) no insects in YOUR base, but instead in a far-away spot where you can deal with the infestation in your own time and in your own way. No bugs in your bed; no bugs in your food; only bugs way out in the out-of-the-way, optimized-for-infestation cave you have prepared in advance.
