Southampton (Maybush) - Nursling, Millbrook & Lordshill ROUNDABOUTS + Minis

In this video we explore some of the key roundabouts around Southampton Maybush area, including:

Nursling (B&Q / Ordnance Survey - SO16 0YW)

Millbrook (McDonald’s SO16 9SH)

Lordshill (Sainsbury’s - SO16 8HY) - N.B. The two elongated roundabouts near Sainsbury’s were reflowed slightly in December 2021, with hatched areas added to avoid potential confusion, this new markings are not shown in this video.

Also a selection of minis and other roundabouts illustrating the use of the M S P S L system/sequence to approach. * See correction to Nursling, detailed below.

Most routes are shown with dash-cam footage through the windscreen of the training car for clarity of signs and road markings. Some routes are then repeated in a different car, in heavier traffic conditions, filmed from an over-shoulder perspective to enable you to see: head movements for mirror checks & observations; signalling (timing, self-cancelling); timing of gear changes (thumb-up & thumb-down palming technique); steering technique (a blend of Fixed Grip and Pull-Push).

I attempt to give a basic spoken thoughts commentary talking down through the timing and application of the M S P S L (A D A) system / sequence of car control, and other key things being considered in the driving plan.
As the original RoadCraft video said, “We commentate to concentrate” on our driving, so you may find commentary a useful tool to help focus your concentration.

I have taken default left-lane positioning options throughout which, in the traffic conditions encountered here, would generally be acceptable for a DVSA L-Test. If you are preparing for an Advanced Driving Test with IAM RoadSmart or RoSPA the expectation in terms of ‘getting on with it’ would be slightly higher, so you should be selecting the lane of least resistance to make best unobtrusive progress while remaining safe and legal at all times. You would also be expected to demonstrate a much sharper application of I - P S G A system than I manage to exhibit in this drive! Take guidance from your own Observer on this.

The white car is a current model 2019 Ford Focus with electric Parking brake and Auto-Hold / Auto-Release on the footbrake pedal for other stops; the other car has a traditional Handbrake lever. Notice how the POM (Prepare, Observe, Move) procedure takes slightly longer with the traditional handbrake car; many new cars, vans and lorries on our roads are now moving to two pedal ‘automatics’ where the gear is also selected for the driver.

Video Time Codes:

Start - 11m 30s Nursling*
11m 30s - 43m 00s Millbrook
43m 00s - 59m 00s Lordshill
59m 00s - End. Minis & Roundabouts

* Correction to my commentary on Nursling roundabout: when approaching from Lordshill/Ordnance Survey side, AHEAD (2nd Exit) is only possible in the MIDDLE of the three lanes on approach (not middle or right as I state in the commentary). So, while the route I drive is correct, my commentary is inaccurate - note the hatch markings closing off lane 2 of the B&Q Nursling side exit making it a single lane exit.

L-TEST TIP: if, when following the Examiner’s directions or the Sat Nav, you realise that you have selected the wrong lane, don’t panic! If it is safe to ‘Mirror, Signal then Manoeuvre’ into the correct lane then do so; if not, explain to the Examiner that you realise you are in the wrong lane and take the exit for that lane. The Examiner will then help you get back on track. An isolated error won’t even be recorded as a Driver Fault.
The same advice holds true on any other driving day, a 5 minute detour to your journey is far better than the days you will waste sorting out an insurance claim and repairs following a hasty wrong-lane change decision!

You or your Accompanying Driver MUST NOT attempt to watch these videos while driving - Highway Code Rule 149. There are post codes for 3 conveniently located retail car parks where you can park to review sections of these videos safely before driving the routes. Filming while driving is also inherently dangerous/distracting, beyond fixed position dash-cam type footage which can be a useful tool for reviewing your own driving. #dontstreamanddrive

Provisional Licence holders (L-Drivers) MUST NOT use a motorway unless with an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual control car displaying L-plates.

I hope that you find this video useful in whatever driver development or test you are preparing for! If it saves you time and fuel costs in practicing, please consider making a donation to Hampshire & IoW Air Ambulance, for the days when driving doesn’t go to plan: https://www.justgiving.com/hiowaa
