Pretty Women (Eleri Ward) - University of Michigan - Dance Workshop- Choreographer Catie Leonard
Dancers: Mariangeli Collado, Arin Francis, Kelly Lomonte, Gabriella Palminteri, and Caleb Quezon.
This piece is an exploration of the different representations of beauty in the world. As a group, we dug into the following questions as a prompt for the intention of our movements and shapes:
⁃ What does it mean to be beautiful?
⁃ What does it mean to be beautifully unified and individual?
⁃ Is beauty necessarily feminine? Is femininity beauty?
⁃ Do inner and outer beauty coexist and compliment each other?
⁃ What does it take for beauty to become a universally shared and existing appreciation?
Together we came to the conclusion that identity is beautiful, individuality is beautiful, and community is beautiful. Finding peace, breath, roundedness, and unity within each other is beauty. This piece is a reflection of our journey. The song “Pretty Women”, originally written by Stephen Sondheim for the musical SWEENEY TODD, is recorded through a new lens by Eleri Ward. Her musicality allowed us to find motivation in the words, intention in the silence, and peace in her specific voice and style. I am thankful for the music, the journey, the dancers, and the opportunity. Enjoy!
