What Actually Exists Above and Below Our Solar System?

We picture the solar system as flat — a thin disk of planets orbiting the Sun. But that picture is dangerously incomplete. Our solar system is a three-dimensional sphere of influence, and almost nothing we've ever launched has traveled "up" or "down" out of its plane.

In this cinematic episode, we leave the familiar map and explore what actually exists above and below the orbital plane of the planets — from the Sun's polar wind to the heliopause, the Oort Cloud, and the vast cosmic void in which our entire galaxy drifts.

We follow the only spacecraft to ever break the plane — the Ulysses mission — and trace the discoveries that rewrote what we know about the space surrounding the Sun. We map the heliosphere using NASA's IBEX data, examine the Local Interstellar Cloud our solar system is currently drifting through, and confront the staggering scale of the Oort Cloud.

Then we go further. Above and below the Oort Cloud lies the halo of the Milky Way, and beyond that, evidence suggests our entire galaxy sits inside one of the largest known voids in the universe — the KBC void. We even examine the Sun's gentle vertical oscillation through the galactic plane.
