Killing Fields execution site and two former Khmer Rouge prisons added to UNESCO heritage list

Cambodia celebrated the inscription of three former Khmer Rouge sites as UNESCO World Heritage, marking the first modern-era recognition on behalf of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Killing Fields, and M-13 prison.
These are notorious locations used as torture and execution sites in the past.
At a UNESCO meeting in Paris on July 11, the sites were officially listed under "Cambodian Memorial Sites: From centers of repression to places of peace and reflection."
Cambodia held nationwide drum-beating ceremonies on Sunday to honor the designation.
Cambodia's Interim Culture Minister described the listing as a "model for the world."
