Research Project X-15 -- NASA film about the hypersonic rocket plane
This official NASA film from the National Archives covers the X-15 rocket research aircraft program of the 1960s. Though undated, references in the narrative suggest this film was made in the 1964-65 era. Among the most popular and productive X-planes, the X-15 flew high enough to earn astronaut wings for a number of its pilots. A modified X-15 subsequently attained a speed of Mach 6.7 with Air Force pilot William J. "Pete" Knight. (Have you subscribed to Airailimages on YouTube? Thanks!)
