The Exiled Man Who Invented Democracy in 508 BC #history #ancienthistory #ancientgreece

Ancient Greek democracy was born in 508 BC through one largely forgotten man: Cleisthenes of Athens. The ancient Greek reformer Cleisthenes invented Athenian democracy by dismantling the clan-based power structures that had kept noble families in control for generations — after being exiled by a Spartan king summoned by his own rival, he returned and replaced the old order with ten mixed-region citizen tribes and a broadened popular Assembly. His ten citizen tribes became the template for representative government worldwide. Ancient Greece never looked the same again, and neither did the idea of who deserved a voice in how they were governed.
