Walnut Woods State Park

My Australian Shepherd and I wander the trails of Walnut Woods State Park in Iowa, a place that feels a little enchanted the moment we step beneath its canopy. The park shelters North America’s largest stand of Black Walnut trees, and walking among them feels like moving through a quiet, towering cathedral of dark trunks and filtered light. We make our way toward the old CCC‑built shelter house, its stonework still holding the character of the 1930s, before crossing the modern bridge that spans the Raccoon River. With the water sliding beneath us and the walnuts rustling overhead, the whole park seems to breathe around us, turning an ordinary hike into something calm and memorable.
