What is the Armadillos and Honey project?

The Armadillos and Honey project arose from the need to promote better coexistence between beekeepers and the giant armadillo, an endangered species. The same areas of forest that beekeepers use to harvest honey from native blossoms are also the few remaining areas of forest that giant armadillos depend on for survival.

With deforestation and the subsequent reduction in food availability, giant armadillos have learned to knock down hives in search of bee larvae, causing damage and losses to those who work with the production of honey and its derivatives. That is why we created the “Guide to Coexistence between beekeepers and giant armadillos in the Cerrado of Mato Grosso do Sul”, which brings together techniques the beekeepers themselves proposed and tested to avoid attacks to their beehives by giant armadillos.
