Critical Race Theory in Schools Debate | House Bill 377 | Idaho Reports

On Thursday, the House approved a bill to that supporters say would ban discrimination in schools. Those supporters claim students in public schools are being taught about “critical race theory” -- in other words, curriculum that critically examines the overt and subtle ways racism affects society -- in such a way that makes some students feel uncomfortable.

The bill would mandate students not be required to personally adopt tenets that suggest any sex, race, ethnicity, religion, color, or national origin is inherently superior or inferior to another, and would apply to all students and teachers in Idaho’s public institutions, ranging from kindergarten to universities. Opponents of the bill argue it would stifle open discussion in classrooms and make teachers shy away from having difficult conversations with their students. The bill passed the House in a party line 57-12 vote.

Less than an hour after that vote, the governor and state board of education leaders addressed the critical race theory controversy in a joint press conference: https://youtu.be/uGeFOrQhlRs
