Deadly Tornado Hits Harbin, Heilongjiang, China. Destroys Houses and Property, 1 Dead Many Injured.

Soon after the Wuhan and Suzhou tornadoes, giant tornadoes also appeared in Shangzhi City, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province.

From 17:30 to 18:00 on June 1, Shangzhi City was hit by tornadoes and hail in severe convective weather, which caused different levels of disasters in four towns, Maoershan Town, Wujimi Township, Hedong Township and Changshou Township. According to preliminary local statistics, as of 21:00 that night, 17 injured people were sent to the hospital for treatment, of which one died and 16 were injured.

Affected by a sudden tornado, equipment failures between Maoershanxi and Shangzhi South along the Ha-Mu high-speed rail line caused multiple trains to run late at one time.

According to news from Shangzhi City Emergency Management Bureau, as of 6 a.m. on June 2, 243 villagers had been transferred and resettled. The wind disaster had caused 148 houses to collapse and the initial estimated economic loss was 5.12 million yuan. At present, follow-up work such as house collapse and business losses is proceeding in an orderly manner.

Citizens of several villages in Shangzhi City witnessed the tornado. Related videos showed that the yellow wind column moved slowly, whipping up surrounding debris. After the tornado, villagers’ houses collapsed, their roofs were lifted, and trees were broken. Many residents sighed, "It's too scary. See you for the first time."

Li Lin, a villager in Changxin Village, Hedong Township, Shangzhi City, told China News Weekly that the victims of the tornado were the owner of the chicken farm in the village. He was in his 30s. He was just married and his father was seriously injured. He is still being treated in the hospital.

Suihua Village, Changshou Township, Shangzhi City, is one of the villages passed by the tornado. Villager Zhang Le (pseudonym) was still busy farming in the fields. Seeing that the "black tornado" came from the south, he immediately collected farm tools and drove home, and closed the windows and doors.

Before long, a tornado swept across the village, and iron sheets, weeds, garbage and other debris were rolled up and smashed on the house with a creak, "I'm scared, I don't dare to move." He said.

Among the 100 households in Changxin Village, more than 20 houses collapsed and were damaged. Among them, the chicken farm at the head of the village was the most damaged. The site was originally a primary school, but now it is composed of four or five simple steel structure houses with a length of 50 meters. After the tornado passed, the chicken coop completely collapsed and almost all tens of thousands of chickens died.
