Russian Police Crack Down Protests Outside Belarus Embassy in Moscow

(AP) Russian police broke up a demonstration outside the Belarus embassy in Moscow late Wednesday, after a crowd gathered to protest at the Belarus elections which handed victory to the country's authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Police pushed away protesters who called on Lukashenko - who's ruled Belarus for 26 years - to stand down.

At least ten protesters were detained, according to the OVD-Info rights group that monitors arrests and detentions in Russia.

Belarusian election officials said Lukashenko won a sixth term in office with 80% of the vote, while opposition challenger Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya got only 10%.

The country has seen heavy protests in recent days.

Thousands were back on the streets of the capital Minsk on Thursday, amid a brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.
