This concludes my entry to the Great Guitar Build Off 2021. This year and a half have been something else. Being furloughed in the Summer was something new and, in the sunshine, making the most of it was easy. When I was furloughed second time around, after just two months back at work, things were different. It was November. There was no Christmas Spirit. There were short short days and the novelty of having all the time in the world had faded away. Having followed the GGBO 2020 and its unofficial, spontaneous interest from around the world made me wish I had been involved. When the GGBO 2021 was announced I hardly needed any convincing. I don't expect to win. I am up against people with commodities such as "a workshop" and "experience".
I started this journey back in 1998 when I got my copy of Melvyn Hiscock's Make Your Own Guitar - Second Edition. Over the years and through platforms like Facebook I got to talk to Melvyn and even met him once on a workshop with Bob Taylor at Harrods. The book's third edition had been long overdue following Melvyn's long battle with several recurring cancers. Melvyn passed away shortly after the books came from the printer and before they were released to the public. Melvyn was always there if you had any query about guitar construction or if you wanted to talk Monty Python. This is not a sponsored video. I am making no money out of this and I paid full price for my copy. But I say: GET YOURSELF A COPY OF YOUR OWN.

Guitar makers like Ormsby and Strandberg owe a lot to Melvyn's book. Watch Ola Strandberg and Melvyn chat on this video:

Melvyn volunteers in the adverts for MacMillan Cancer Support and when the time came they were there for him.

His favourite guitar (as in, that he owned) was a Gibson SG Junior.

IF (and it's a big IF) I get on the invitational next year I will make a single dogear all mahogany solid body for the benefit of said charity.

You good people of the judging panel kindly take this into consideration.

I got all my wood from David Dyke at www.luthierssupplies.co.uk who were very patient with my demands due to my lack of lumber processing tools.
Most everything else I had kicking about the house. Some, like the pickups, had been waiting for their destiny for, near as to make no difference, 20 years. When I assembled my first guitar out of Warmoth parts.

This has been a joy from start to finish. If not for the little successes, for the learning that came from the little failures.

Bring on GGBO 2022. Or I have to join the GBBO 2022... and that's not nearly good enough.

Peace to you all. Thank you for watching.
