Trains on Austria's Mariazellerbahn in 2013

The 760mm-gauge Mariazellerbahn runs for just over 90 Km between the city of St Polten and the pilgrimage centre of Mariazell located in the Northern Styrian Alps.

Famous for the use of elderly Class 1099 Co-Co electric locos, I made several visits to the railway between 2001 and 2013. By 2013 the 1099s were on-borrowed time and were replaced by the year's end with new EMUs.

This visit was made in August 2013, a couple of months before the end of the 1099s, and, along with several working 1099s, I videoed the distinctive Class 2095 diesel-hydraulics, the Class 5090 railcars and 399.06, a Engerth semi-articulated 0-8+4T steam loco operating a steam special.
