Everton bids farewell to Goodison Park

Goodison Park, located in Walton, Liverpool, is one of the oldest and most historic football stadiums in the world, serving as the home of Everton Football Club since 1892. Opened on August 24, 1892, it was England’s first purpose-built football stadium, featuring stands on three sides and hosting its first match, a 4-2 Everton victory over Bolton Wanderers, on September 2, 1892. With a current all-seated capacity of 39,414, it has hosted more top-flight matches than any other stadium in England, earning the nickname “The Grand Old Lady.” The stadium, situated 2 miles north of Liverpool’s city center, has four stands: the Goodison Road Stand, Gwladys Street Stand, Bullens Road Stand, and Sir Philip Carter Park Stand, with the Gwladys Street Stand known for its passionate atmosphere.

Goodison Park has been a stage for significant events, including an FA Cup Final in 1894, five matches during the 1966 World Cup (including a semi-final), and numerous international fixtures. It was the first English stadium to introduce innovations like dugouts and undersoil heating. Despite its rich history, its aging infrastructure and limited corporate facilities have prompted Everton’s move to a new 52,888-seat stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock for the 2025–26 season. Initially set for demolition, Goodison Park was saved by new owners, The Friedkin Group, in 2024, and will become the permanent home of Everton’s women’s team from 2025, making it the UK’s largest dedicated women’s football stadium. Plans include upgrading facilities and rebranding to reflect the women’s team’s identity, ensuring the stadium’s legacy endures.
