Inquiry into State Capture | President Ramaphosa says he will step down if charged with corruption
President Cyril Ramaphosa has said he will step down should he be charged with corruption. This in response to former Eskom CEO, Brian Molefe, who implicated Ramaphosa at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry last week.
Molefe says Ramaphosa was involved in decisions that furthered his own business interests, as chairperson and a shareholder during mining company Glencore's acquisition of the Optimum coal mine in 2012. According to Molefe, Ramaphosa stood to benefit personally when Optimum re-negotiated its contract with Eskom to hike the cost of coal, which was to the detriment of the utility.
Ramaphosa's presidency is faced with numerous challenges, including criticism in his dealing with corruption, to the CR17 campaign.
