Instrument Flight Lesson Mastering Challenges in the Air

Today’s flight was all about **instrument flight training**—and my very first **instrument approaches**. Flying solely by reference to the instruments is a whole different challenge, and this lesson really showed why precision matters so much in IFR flying.

Using **foggles** to block outside visual references made even simple tasks feel intense. Holding altitude, tracking courses, and staying ahead of the airplane took constant focus. Small deviations quickly added up, and it was a real struggle to fly as precisely as the instruments demand. This is where you learn that instrument flying isn’t about perfection—it’s about discipline, scan, and staying calm when the workload spikes.

There’s a reason many pilots say the **instrument rating is the hardest rating to earn**. It pushes your flying skills, decision-making, and mental endurance to a whole new level. But every tough approach and missed call is part of becoming a safer, more capable pilot.
