Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority has announced the creation of a controlled maritime zone in the Strait of Hormuz, requiring ships to obtain authorisation before passing through the strategic waterway. Iran is seeking to establish a mechanism with Oman to ensure sustainable security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has largely shut the Strait of Hormuz to all ships apart from its own since the war with the U.S. and Israel began in late February, causing the biggest disruption to global energy supplies in history. The United States responded last month ​with its own blockade of Iran's ports.
