How to Mosaic Satellite Images in ENVI: A Step-by-Step Guide

In this video, I'll guide you through the process of mosaicking multiple satellite images in ENVI, creating a seamless output that combines four multispectral images of the same area. Imagine you're working with overlapping image tiles, and your goal is to stitch them together. First, we start by setting up our input and output directories, followed by opening the four images. Once the images are loaded, ENVI automatically displays them as true-color composites. Next, we use the Seamless Mosaic tool to load all four scenes, ensuring there's enough overlap in the area of interest. We then hide and reveal the image footprints as needed to navigate, and with the "Show Filled Footprints" option, we can clearly see where the images overlap. After arranging the scenes in the desired order to avoid overlap issues, we address those pesky black border pixels by setting a "Data Ignore Value" to clean up the image edges. Moving forward, we generate automatic seamlines between the overlapping images, which help smooth transitions between the tiles. Sometimes, these seamlines might cut through important features like buildings or roads, so we’ll edit the seamlines, adjusting them to follow natural features like a road or a river, making sure the final mosaic looks more visually seamless. Once the seamlines are perfect, we save them as shapefiles to preserve all our hard work. The final touches involve defining the output area, color correction, and even adding a feathering distance to ensure smooth blending across tile edges.
